By Species
Species are the taxonomic unit immediately below a genus. A species is often defined as a group of organisms that can successfully interbreed with each other, but that do not normally interbreed with other groups. This is of dubious value in botany, since "grex" (cross-genera) species are common. At any rate, it does form the second component of a scientific name - 'alba' is the species in the name 'Quercus alba' (White Oak).
This collection also includes hybrids and cultivars, which aren't strictly speaking species. However, pragmatism has outweighed pedantry.
